“In Wild Rice tradition, this season is curated not just to entertain, but also to shine a spotlight on issues and communities that are too often neglected in the public sphere,” says Ivan Heng, Founding Artistic Director of Wild Rice. “We programme shows that comfort and delight, but also challenge and provoke, because the theatre is where we can and must come together to think about who we are – as individuals, and as a society.”
Breaking New Ground
Three plays that are new to Singapore audiences sit at the heart of the season, including:
- The Christians: After winning acclaim in productions across the US and the UK, Lucas Hnath’s tender, searching play about faith and fundamentalism makes its Singapore premiere in this production directed by Glen Goei and starring Shane Mardjuki and Oon Shu An.
- Girls Girls Girls: In conjunction with Pride Month, this myth-busting, soul-affirming oral history project shines a spotlight on the lives, culture and stories of queer women in Singapore – a community that too rarely gets to take centre stage.
- The Radicalisation of Mrs. Mary Lim-Rodrigues: A heart-wrenching meditation on the potentially devastating pressures within a school environment, Michelle Tan’s new play looks at the issue of teen suicide through the relationship between a well-meaning school principal and her brilliant but troubled student.
Each work tackles subjects that fundamentally shape our lives, identities and communities, but are frequently avoided or brushed past in public discourse.
“True to our mission, our theatre exists as a space where we dare to think aloud,” says Heng. “These new works do not offer easy answers, but they invite us to sit with uncertainty, to listen to voices that are rarely heard, and to reflect on the values that should guide how we all live with one another.”
Returning Crowd Favourites
The season also shines a spotlight on three homegrown hits that are returning by popular demand to the Wild Rice stage, including:
- Tunggu Sekejap: The P. Ramlee Suite: This concert production celebrates the enduring beauty and relevance of P. Ramlee’s music in an exhilarating blend of orchestral music, theatrical storytelling and cinematic flair.
- Monkey Goes West: An affectionate and cheeky retelling of the beloved Chinese fantasy classic, this family-friendly holiday musical returns after a decade in a thrilling new production completely reimagined for the Wild Rice stage by Heng.
- Red Riding Hood: Reflecting Wild Rice’s commitment to nurturing a love of theatre from an early age, Thomas Lim’s funny, interactive and very Singaporean adaptation of the classic fairytale will delight audiences young and old.
“Each of these productions won audiences’ hearts during their original runs, playing to sold-out houses performance after performance,” says Heng. “We are excited to bring them back because – just as much as we celebrate new work – we think it is important for as many people as possible to watch shows that have become a part of Singapore’s theatrical canon and legacy.”
As a whole, Wild Rice’s 2026 season is a testament to the passion, talent and ingenuity of the country’s best theatre-makers.
“Every show in our season, whether a bold new endeavour or a crowd-pleasing hit, demonstrates what our incredible artists here in Singapore can do,” Heng concludes. “We can’t wait to welcome audiences to our theatre this year to experience the best of Singapore theatre for themselves!”
