For one very special evening, fairy tales, legends and myths sprang to life in Singapore! On 6 October 2017, the country’s great and good came together for Once Upon A Time, a spectacular gala event to benefit W!LD RICE.
Urged to arrive in full fairy-tale finery, our 692 guests went all out. Shangri-La Hotel’s Island Ballroom was transformed into a land of pure fantasy – one where Snow White and Dracula could chat, drink and hang out with Wonder Woman and Maleficent.
For the evening’s bespoke menu, Chef Pepe Moncayo of BAM! collaborated with Shangri-La Hotel’s excellent team, led by Chef Franco Brodini. Together, they cast a magic spell on the exquisite four-course dinner enjoyed by our guests.
The highlight of the evening was Through The Looking Glass: an incredible concert that wowed audiences with the sheer amount of talent and joy on display. Some of the finest performers from Singapore and Malaysia – including Sean Ghazi, Cheryl Tan, Dwayne Lau, Crenshaw Yeo and Andrew Marko – sang and danced their hearts out for our delighted guests.
This year’s RICE BALL marked the launch of W!LD & Free, a special fund dedicated to making theatre more accessible for children, youths, the elderly and the underprivileged.
Susanna Kang, one of our amazing Angels who also serves on the RICE BALL Committee, kicked off the fund with a $20,000 donation. Thanks to the generosity of our guests, a grand total of $105,500 had been raised to benefit W!LD & Free by the end of the night.
Thank you so much for your incredible support, Susanna!
During the Ball, Ivan Heng, Artistic Director of W!LD RICE, recounted our achievements over the past year.
He also gave our guests something to look forward to and hoped that they would be a part of building a new home for W!LD RICE – namely, the gorgeous, state-of-the-art theatre that we are collaborating with CapitaLand to build in Funan Mall.
“We hope that you’ll be a part of this next chapter of our fairy tale,” he said. “Everyone in this room has kept us going with your love and support, even when times got tough… You have allowed us to tell the stories and dream the dreams that really matter.”
