In August 2014, young & W!LD – W!LD RICE’s youth development division – will present its first showcase, Little Riots and Other Stories, devised entirely by the participants themselves under the guidance of programme directors Rodney Oliveiro and Serena Ho.
The sixteen members of this theatrical ensemble hail from all walks of life but share the same passion for the art and craft of theatre
Since April 2014, they have attended a series of training workshops, during which they have created, refined and performed their own monologues for their first milestone showcase.
“We knew we were bringing some of the brightest stars of tomorrow into the programme,” explains Rodney, who, like Serena, is a professional actor and theatre educator.
“Even then, we have been astounded – in the best way possible – by the power and range of ideas and talent we’ve found in this group over the past three months.”
The monologues cover a diverse range of issues and characters, exploring ideas of life, death, gender and identity through the eyes of – among others – a tarot master and a vampire.
“The sheer energy and dynamism of this group of young people has inspired us enormously,” adds Serena. “There will be two sets of monologues, for which we have fashioned two broad narratives. But the words and ideas are all theirs.”
The monologues will be performed for the public at W!LD RICE’s performance space in 33 Kerbau Road in Little India.
“Young artists need time and space in order to develop and grow. We are excited to give these theatre talents of tomorrow this platform to hone their craft and skills,” says Ivan Heng, Artistic Director of W!LD RICE.
Performances are at 8pm daily, from 28-30 August 2014. Admission is free of charge.
