Back by popular demand, Tunggu Sekejap: The P. Ramlee Suite is Julian Wong’s deeply personal response to the life and legacy of a cultural giant whose music has enchanted generations.
In this heartfelt and inspiring tribute to P. Ramlee, Wong – one of Singapore’s most outstanding music arrangers and directors –reshapes beloved classics like Azizah, Getaran Jiwa and Tunggu Sekejap into a three-movement orchestral work that feels both affectionate and alive. Within the intimate setting of The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre, the music is performed with warmth, joy and virtuosic grandeur by re: mix, a 30-member chamber orchestra under the assured direction of maestro Foo Say Ming.
Throughout the show, Wong steps out from behind the music to reflect on how these songs entered his life and why they continue to speak to him. In a playful and poignant theatrical conceit blending memory, imagination and homage, he finds himself in conversation with P. Ramlee, brought to life by Fadhli Ramlee. What emerges is an affecting portrait of an artist who wrote for his times, but whose music has since proved to be timeless.
Reuniting the creative team led by Ivan Heng that so memorably staged Don’t Call Him Mr. Mari Kita, this extraordinary concert is an invitation to listen closely, and to hear P. Ramlee anew.
