Season's Greetings
and a special Thank YOU!

Dear friends and W!LD RICE Angels,

On behalf of all at W!LD RICE, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! W!LD RICE has enjoyed a truly special and groundbreaking year of theatre, and we could not have done it without you. At this special time of celebration and reflection, we’d like to thank each and every one of you for your amazing support.

Bernarda Alba in the House!

We began 2014 by throwing open the doors of The House of Bernarda Alba, our production of Federico Garcia Lorca's electrifying classic, in an adaptation by Chay Yew. This production marked a real departure for Glen Goei, our Associate Artistic Director. It called on him to shift gears, from lighthearted farce to darkest tragedy, and he rose to the challenge admirably. He was supported in his efforts by a powerhouse cast quite unlike any we've ever seen before. Three generations of Singapore's finest actresses made magic onstage, bolstered by an ensemble of forty women. The sets, costumes and lighting for this show were truly some of the most exquisite work we've had the pleasure of presenting to audiences.

Earnest-ly welcomed to the Macao Arts Festival!

Just two weeks later, we were flying the flag for Singapore theatre overseas. Our award-winning adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest was the first English-language production to be presented at the Macao Arts Festival. It was a thrill to deliver Oscar Wilde's delicious dialogue – still sparkling with wit and relevance over a century later – to packed houses at the beautiful Dom Pedro V Theatre.

A Riot-ous Evening with young & W!LD

We've always believed in the importance of identifying and nurturing the theatre talents of tomorrow. To that end, we rebooted young & W!LD, our youth training programme. Led by co-directors Rodney Oliveiro and Serena Ho, the ensemble has embarked on an 18-month odyssey of theatre-making. As part of their course, the troupe staged Little Riots and Other Stories in August, a showcase that they wrote, directed and performed themselves.

Prowling through the NIGHT SAFARI with Hossan Leong

In October, we invited guests to head into the wild with the NIGHT SAFARI, our annual RICE BALL – a fundraising gala that allows W!LD RICE to do the work we do throughout the year. It was a spectacular night in which local luminaries like Pam Oei and Hossan Leong entertained audiences together with our special guest, London West End superstar Ria Jones.

And last, but certainly not least, the W!LD RICE pantomime came into its own with Monkey Goes West – the first of our pantomimes to look East for inspiration. With a clever local spin on the beloved Chinese epic, the production playfully incorporated Chinese opera, wushu, flamenco and shadow puppetry, and was underscored by a lively soundtrack spanning Chinese folk songs, showtunes, cha-cha and rock and roll.

Monkey-ing around with our amazing cast!

Watching and listening to the show countless times with a laughing and visibly moved audience, I was reminded that this show was truly a singular sensation: one that cannot be experienced anywhere else in the world! Kudos to the entire Monkey Goes West team for putting up a pantomime that's full of so much heart, humour and local flavour. We feel very honoured and proud to have presented the first homegrown theatre production at the newly refurbished Victoria Theatre to record-breaking sold-out houses.

Allow us to capture your imagiNATION!

But 2014 isn't quite over yet and, as you might expect, we are already hard at work for next year, putting together a programme which we promise will capture your imagiNATION! Reflecting on the five values embodied by the stars of the Singapore flag, this will be a double celebration of Singapore’s jubilee and W!LD RICE’s 15th Anniversary. It all kicks off in April next year with our adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's Public Enemy, followed by Another Country in June, Hotel in August (a commission by the Singapore International Festival of Arts), our year-end pantomime The Emperor's New Clothes and The Freedom Fighters in early 2016.

We can't wait to welcome you into the theatre for one of our most entertaining, inspiring and thought-provoking seasons yet. Till next we meet, here’s wishing you love, laughter, inspiration and peace for the holiday season, and the year to come.

Sincerely yours,

Celebrate W!LD RICE'S 2014 season and look towards 2015 with us!
