On Censorship and the Arts

Dear friends and W!LD RICE Angels,

We have been very busy since our return from Macau! Preparations are well underway for Monkey Goes West; young and W!LD is in full swing, and we are planning ahead for 2015 and our impending move to our new premises.

Over the past few weeks, I've had many people ask me why I'm against the MDA's proposed Term Licensing Scheme. After all, W!LD RICE won't even be eligible for the scheme. Nevertheless, with 44 other arts groups, we signed the position paper laying out our concerns about this scheme. We've done so because we feel that this is an issue of vital importance to all of us: not just artists, but everyone who loves, enjoys and engages with the theatre in Singapore. And that’s you.

Earlier this month, Alfian and I spoke at an event at Books Actually. I hope our discussion – the highlights of which we've included in this issue – will give you a better idea of the concerns of artists and theatre-makers here in Singapore.

Also in this issue: we are thrilled to share with you a “behind the scenes” photo-spread for Monkey Goes West. We'd also like you to meet Evelyn Chia, the newest member of the W!LD RICE team; and Dawn Teo, one of our bright young talents from young & W!LD.

Enjoy W!LD Times!

My best,

Hot Off The Press!
