Ang
Tau Mui
Written By Leow Puay Tin
Directed By Ivan Heng
Starring Selena Tan

Synopsis
"On the day she died, Ang Tau Mui went shopping."
W!LD RICE presents Selena Tan (Animal Farm, I Not Stupid) as Ang Tau
Mui, in Leow Puay Tin's internationally acclaimed play about the
aspirations of a toilet cleaner.
Single
and fighting her 40s, Ang Tau Mui is fast on the way to becoming an
"Auntie".
But in spite of society's prejudices, she knows herself to be a
Modern Woman, who has worked hard for the freedom to live as she
sees fit. She disregards conventions, and sometimes the law, and is
not above the temptations of the flesh. It’s her life after all, and
she runs the cleanest loos in the land!
Hounded by security guards, hit on by seedy suitors, Ang Tau Mui's
life has none of the glamour of her idol, 1960's Hong Kong movie
superstar Lin Dai. And neither retail therapy nor her rose-scented
air freshener offers much solace for broken dreams.
Her story begins on the last day of her life, when armed with her
wry sense of humour, she goes on her final shopping trip, "looking
for something to buy"...
Directed by Ivan Heng, and a brand new collaboration with Casey Lim
(Visual and Media Artist), Jason Ang (Er Hu), and the Chinese Opera
Institute, Ang Tau Mui is a humorous, bittersweet tale about Living
and Loving in the Big City.
Director's Message (Ivan Heng)
In Ang Tau Mui, Leow Puay Tin presents us with a colourful
character that lives life in the margins and on her own terms. In
making meaning of the fragments of Ang Tau Mui’s extraordinary life,
the company has been challenged to examine the assumptions we make
and the prejudices we bear in regarding the “toilet cleaners” of
today’s society. In these modern times when we are consumed by
consumerism and there is pressure to buy “something” to become
“someone”, where one is judged and defined by how one looks, what
one wears, and what one owns; Ang Tau Mui is a timely meditation. I
shop, therefore I am? + more
