30/06/2003NEW ARTS-BASED CREATIVE THINKING PROGRAMME FOR
YOUNG PEOPLE
“Many (young people) cannot be bothered or think their views have
no impact…”
Singapore Polytechnic Business School Director, V. Maheantharan,
The Straits Times,
26 February 2003
“There is a need to nurture and cultivate interest in world
affairs in our students, which is something that we have not been
able to achieve despite numerous efforts.”
Students writing from London, The Straits Times, Forum, 4 March
2003
These are frequently expressed sentiments about young people in
Singapore. That is about with change with BIG SKY, an innovative
programme by W!LD RICE’s Education & Outreach Division.
BIG SKY allows students to practice critical and creative
thinking with subject matter that is current, diverse and relevant
to their lives.
In an increasingly volatile economic and political global
climate, we have to ensure that our youth are able to critically
evaluate new situations and information, diversify their skills and
express themselves clearly with confidence.
BIG SKY will reconnect heads with hearts, widen perspectives and
help inculcate a healthy interest in different subject matter and
disciplines through drama, creative writing, visual art and music.
The inter-disciplinary approach of BIG SKY will enrich students
engagement in their fields of study, encourage more creative and
meaningful solutions to problems, and help students cultivate
balanced and accurate world views.
In BIG SKY, students will translate their thoughts in creative
and conceptual ways that will culminate to an engaging public
exhibition and performance at the Singapore Art Museum.
Each of the featured art forms will be used as vehicles for
exploring the sub-themes of Sovereignty v Globalisation (with
perspectives from Drama & Visual Art), and Individuality v
Ethnical/Popular Culture (with perspectives from Music &
Installation Art).
